Fluffy is relevant
Posted By: yewtsrnogood 3/4/2010BCS Trophy: Big fluffy numbers are absolutely relevant when it comes to calculating prestige. When you have a heisman trophy, a doak walker award, a maxwell award, a davy o'brien award, an outland trophy, and a national championship to your name you just entered into elite company as only a very small (I think 8) number of schools can say the same thing about their program. I am not actually sure why but the U just does not get a lot of national respect. They started the season ranked 18th after winning a BCS game! Then they were dropped after losing close on the road to the eventual Pac-10 champion. BYU has something like 22 conference championships. They won 102 games in the 80's which was second only to nebraska. People were talking about BYU being a dark horse for the nc two weeks into the season. The talk was obviously way off, but it speaks to the national respect that BYU has and the U does not. The next time BYU goes undefeated no one will need to have this argument. BYU will play for the nc if they are one of two undefeated teams. The same cannot be said for Utah. I think they deserve respect, but they just don't get it. No one gave them a chance against TCU (which was acurate) but you would think that after a second BCS win and only having one loss to an oregon team that by that time was ranked in the top ten they would have been hyped a little more, but they weren't.

NC and Other Things...
Posted By: My BCS Trophy is Bigger Than Yours 3/4/2010CougarinBoston, first of all, yes, we are comparing and debating about Utah and BYU, my point was to show you that those are all empty facts. They show great fluffy numbers for BYU in comparison to Utah but they don’t matter when comparing the “prestige” of a program. That’s all I was saying. Second, I have had this same NC argument before on this board, and I am not going to dispute you on the fact the AP has their own title and they didn't vote Utah. But one aspect that you ignored was something Dwyer somewhat touched on. The elitist and bias views the media has, skews the way they vote. Now, USC and LSU each had a loss and shared the title in ’03. If that were...BYU instead of USC and they were UNDEFEATED, I guarantee you LSU would have been voted in both polls. It’s all in the name. Utah was not voted because they are not in the “BIG 6”. BYU won their title under the structure the NCAA had at the time. And, I have said it before; you could even credit BYU for the BCS being created (see ’84 and ’96). But under this structure, that same team would not win it now. As for the whole better college debate, I will not really touch on that but you missed another small detail, BYU is a private institution. They should have a higher GPA and test scores, they can be extra picky.

Clarifications
Posted By: Cougarin Boston 3/4/2010First clarification: BYU and Utah's Law School's are not comparable. If you go by the U.S. News and World Rankings, BYU is #41 and Utah is #45, but that is very skewed. First of all, BYU has fallen in those rankings from #29 just a few years ago, because of the minority factor considered, as well as the student to faculty ratio. Utah has risen up into the 40's for the first time last year, because the hired a bunch of faculty to improve the student to faculty ratio. Those ridiculous rankings are the ONLY place where Utah is close. Average LSAT score: BYU 167, Utah 159. Average GPA: BYU 3.79 Utah 3.41. Average Salary for 1st year Grads: BYU $92,000, Utah $70,000. That last number is the killer. That is a $22,000 starting salary for school 45 minutes apart. Gee, I wonder who the top firms prefer. Don't kid yourself. For those applying to Law School, as I have done, BYU is obvious, and it's not even close. Second Clarification: James Dywer, you gave some arguments about SOS and whatever that the BCS takes into account. Great. That's not the point. The point is, the AP Poll, which awards it's own seperate NC, placed Utah at #2. It could have named them National Champs, departing from the BCS as it did when it named USC Champs in 2003, but they didn't Newcomers to CFB think that the BCS and the NC are synonymous. They aren't. Their are 2 National Titles awarded each year that count: The BCS and the AP. Just because they agree in most years does not mean that they are compelled to do so. When the BCS is done in gone, whether in 5 years or in 25, the AP poll will still be the oldest and most prestigious poll in the country. On that count alone, Utah would NOT have been national champs. I'm not talking about better or who played tougher teams. I'm talking about who was NC, and who was not.

BYU Lacrosse?
Posted By: BYU-JL 3/3/2010Just to clear up a comment that a fellow BYU fan wrote below, BYU's lacrosse team did win the championship for the MCLA, but I wouldn't recommend using the term "national champion." Division I Lacrosse is where all the great teams play, and where the real national champions are decided (generally teams from the mid-Atlantic). The true current national champion is Syracuse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Men%27s_Lacrosse_Championship). I heard this claim being thrown around BYU campus a lot the past couple years, and have had to clear up the misunderstanding for a lot of people. BYU's team is good, no doubt, but nowhere near the top echelon of teams. Go Cougs!

Okayyyy.
Posted By: T time 3/3/2010Sports will come and go and so will the players. You can't base how awesome the U or the Y is off their sports. When all is said and done, it's the edcation that comes out of the schools and from which school companies want more graduates. In this area, it is consistently proven that BYU tops the charts. The U, thanks to generous LDS members, tops the medical fields and comparable law departments. However, it's no surprise that China will only send its people to one of 2 schools in the U.S.: BYU or Harvard. Forget about the sports stats, they come and go. The integrity of a school comes from within and BYU by far kicks the temporary party animals from up north to the curb. It's a good school, just not as good as the Y and it never will be.

Facts are the facts, sorry...
Posted By: James Dywer 3/2/2010Mr. CougarinBoston, It's great to know that pretty much BYU fans are taking part. I do appreciate your response and I must say a very educated response. Although I have to say in looking at both the 84' schedule in which BYU played and the one Utah played in 08'. Aside from BYU playing Pitt (oh by the way went 3-8 in 84') in the first game and then barely getting by which you would admit a very, very mediocre 6-5 Michgan team. My gosh who else did they play that was even close to being ranked, yes I know I can't say that CSU, Wyoming or Hawaii were ranked unfortunately. Looking at Utah beating four ranked teams in 2008 in Oregon St (who beat USC), TCU, BYU and Alabama (who was five minutes away from playing for the NT) nearly beating Florida in 08'. Further more as part of the BCS the coaches are all in agreement that they vote for the team that wins the NT game. The BCS factors its ranking process on many different numbers one of those being strength of conferene well obviously the MWC is never higher than the big five hence giving them a lower point total when factoring in their BCS ranking score. Lastly, which is just my opinion only since the introduction of the BCS it has skewed the voting of all the other major polls because of fact that schools like a BYU, TCU, Boise or Utah will never have a chance to play for a NT in football unless a miracle is to happen where any of the schools from the big five loss at least three games. CougarinBoston excellent response, quite honestly can't believe there have not been any Utah supports responding. Laaamoohs!

False
Posted By: CougarinBoston 3/2/2010Both of you. first of all, to Mr. Killer facts. Did you hear me say that it was harder to go undfeated in the MWC than the SEC?!?! No. You didn't. And, did you realize that there is an academic compenent to having All-Americans? And did you realize that LSU has one of the worst graduation rates among D1? Well, there you go. Now you know. LSU can win titles without being undefeated (as they've done twice in the last 6 years) BYU can't. Do you get the message you nincompoop? We're comparing BYU to Utah. The MWC and the SEC are totally different. Now, to Mr. BYU fan Dywer: Utah wouldn't have won the NC had the BCS not been in place. Evidence? Because the AP, which voted them #2, didn't crown them Champs, when they full well could have. Further, the Coaches poll placed them at #4, while they could have had them as high as #2. No, Utah would not have been Champs in 2008 without the BCS. They would have finished #2 and #4. In fact, they would have been lucky to finish #2 and #4, because without the BCS, they wouldn't have been playing in the Sugar Bowl. Get your stuff straight fellas. If you have evidence to the contrary, I welcome it.

Let's tell the truth
Posted By: James Dywer 2/26/2010Okay I have read all the football stats and yes BYU has a much more storied tradition than our counterpart Utah. I must say all the talk about how BYU has won a National Title talk in 84' yes we did win in 1984. Had the voting rules and all the BCS stuff not been in place in 2008 there is absolutely no doubt Utah would have been crowned National Champs. I am sorrry I am a ture blue cougar, and I would even go so far to say that when you compare BYU's 1984 season and Utah's 2008 season again there is no question Utah went through far more tougher teams. I apologize but fact is fact. GO COUGARS!!

Killer Facts...
Posted By: My BCS Trophy is Bigger Than Yours 2/24/2010CougarinBoston, I am going to show your facts against those of an SEC school to show you how irrelevant your facts are in the argument. First off, BYU has 16 national player awards the SEC team has 10. BYU has faced 19 ranked bowl opponents, I don't know how you found those numbers out, I can't find that info for BYU or this team, but how many did BYU win? Utah has won 9 consecutive bowl games, BYU has won 9 ALL TIME, but that doesn't matter, I guess. BYU has played in 21 bowl games that pay at least $1M, again, another fact that I can't find for either school, but we will say this team has about the same... BYU gone undefeated in conference 9 times all-time, this SEC team has only 8(not all in the SEC). BYU has gone undefeated once all time, this SEC team has just 2 seasons undefeated. BYU has 53 All-Americans, SEC team has 40. Now, based on your arguments and the outcome in favor of BYU, you would argue BYU is a better football program but I doubt very many people (other than BYU fans) would say BYU has a better football program than LSU. Almost all of those arguments were in favor of BYU except one I omitted, 3-1 national championships (which LSU has won two in the time frame “that made Utah football worth noticing at all”.) If you want to argue that BYU is superior to Utah in football or whatever else, that is fine but these arguments you have don’t really prove anything. By the way, the “21 Million $-plus” bowls BYU has supposedly gone to still don’t equal the revenue of the two Utah went to: $14M in 2004 (7 for Utah 1 for every MWC team, your welcome) and $17.5M in 2009 (dispersed to all Non-BCS teams, your welcome, again). You say Utah has only been relevant about the last ten years, the same could be said about BYU in the mid 70’s when BYU actually started winning in the series, but since they continued doing well you can’t say that. Everything is in a cycle, BYU fans just choose to point out certain parts of history. 30 years from now who knows where BYU and Utah will be...

CougarinBoston
Posted By: Unbeaten in Conference 2/23/2010although Utah has had a couple of good seasons in the last decade, it is always shocking when I realize just how irrelevant they are in football. Set aside the lack of major awards, and the totally anemic number of 6 ranked finishes in history--and wrap your mind around this. Utah has only gone unbeaten in conference play TWICE since the year Leave it to Beaver premiered on CBS (1957). Two times. Just two. Yes, you guessed it. 2004 and 2008. The 2 seasons that make Utah football worth noticing at all. For heaven's sake, BYU has gone unbeaten in conference play THREE times since Lavell retired in 2000. (2001, 2006 and 2007). To say nothing of 1996, 1991, 1984...etc. etc.

BYU National Champs
Posted By: Cougar Fan 2/12/2010The only thing Utah is good at is Women's Gymnastics. If rugby and lacrosse were included in the duel, BYU would kill. (BYU is the national champion in both).

To The Duel Master
Posted By: CougarinBoston 2/10/2010As a fan of the duel, I would suggest that the Deseret Duel account for all NCAA sanctioned NCAA sports that both school compete in. As far as I understand, that would include Women's Cross Country, Women's Indoor Track and Field, Women's Outdoor Track and Field, Men's Golf and Women's Golf. Obviously, in the area of so called small sports, the two school are not uniform in their allocation of import. Utah obviously promotes their gymnastics more than BYU, while BYU spends much more effort pursuing their interests in Men's Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf and Track and Field. Since this is the case, it seems absurd to put such a high premium on gymnastics, and totally disregard track and field, cross country and golf. In my opinion, the absence of these sports, combined with the too-high-point allocation in the equally small sport of gymnastics strips the Duel of a good degree of credibility. The rumors are rampant that the Duel is set up to appear as equal as possible, rather than letting the sports' actually determine the overall best school. In my opinion, the rumors have at least some truth to them, because if the allocation adjustments I've mentioned took place, BYU would win every single year, even if they lost football. I mean, Utah hasn't won the season series in baseball in almost 15 years.

Bowl Games
Posted By: CougarinBoston 2/9/2010BYU has played against 19 ranked Bowl opponents. Utah has played against 3. BYU has played in 21 Bowl Games that pay at least 1 Million dollars. Utah has played in 2.

Seal the Deal

Awards
Posted By: Cougarinboston 2/5/2010Utah has won ZERO National player awards in history. That is 16 less than BYU, and, one less than Utah State (Merlin Olson won the Outland Trophy in 1961).

Funny Story
Posted By: BYU 2/4/2010So, When I went to the BYU vs. Utes Basketball game, the funniest thing happened! I was in the Men's Bathrrom at Half-time. There was a man, with a Utes Shirt on, so I'm assuming it was a Utes fan, and he said to me, "Do You Know What The 'Y' Stands for? URINAL!"
