Deseret First - BYU vs Utah

The Arizona Daily Star included this comment about expanding to include Utah: "The Utah football program reminds me a lot of Kush's Sun Devils of the '70s, WAC powerhouses that went 12-0, 11-0, 11-1 (twice) and 10-2. By their second Pac-10 season, the Sun Devils went 1-11. "Otherwise, the expansion of 2010 and that of 1978 have little in common." The Utes were chosen as second fiddle to a Colorado football team that went 3-9 last year in the Big 12. Good riddance, utes!

Way to go UTES..out of 15.5 points the skirts came thru with 13...maybe the U should join a conference where only girls compete....good luck in your new highly competitive PAC xx conference

Well, Utah is in the Pac X. Good for them. I have no problem with them getting invited to the Pac. The Pac went for a homerun and ended up with a swinging bunt. The only thing i just have to shake my head and chuckle at are comments like the 12 year old Ute gentlemen that posted bellow. The Utes should be excited. Its exciting for them. But the, "Utah is better than BYU and this proves it",type stuff is just funny. BYU beats Utah in most every sport most every year, has many more conference championships, has more national championships, has a better national pedigree and is better university in terms of academics. Bottom line: BYU is a church owned Mormon school that won't play on Sundays. Of course they were never going to be invited. I just can't help but think that when Utah goes 6-6 in football and doesn't win more than 2 conference championships in anything besides gymnastics in the next 3 years if they won't miss the MWC. I just hope they have the guts to keep the all sport rivalry going but... i doubt it.

What the heck is wrong with Utah.. if byu got invited and Utah did not, I would not have supported it.. and Utah fans are going around acting like u want to leave byu.. deep down nobody wants them to sepetate.. lets put down our egos for one minute and think about this, this is really bad.

So who won this duel again???

BYU should never again play utah in anything. Shouldn't do anything ever!! utah should have said something to the Pac-10 about bringing BYU along! Or both should have pitched each other to the Big 12 to make it 12. After 100+ years of battle both should have been stuck at the hip. The clean well off big brother and the dumb little brother. (Like you don't know who's who) BYU should now tell utah that they wanted to get away from us, to now be gone! Once again Max Hall was right about the u.

So what happens to the Deseret First Duel now that Utah has been invited to the PAC?

The Big 10 has invited both Nebraska and Missouri, so the Big 12 now has the floor. If Texas and the others decide to go to the PAC-10, there will be no invite to Utah. It's just as well, Utah athletics couldn't consistently compete with anyone in the PAC-10, except maybe the Cougars of Washington State. They would be trading one set of Cougars as their rivals for another set.

BYU not only won the Deseret Duel title, but all of the other sports (not included in the duel) as well.

Did anyone see the BYU baseball game against utah today? Wow, that was awesome. The Cougars had 2 grand slams on their way to a 25 run game to win!!!

BYU should win at least 50 points in the duel next year. I'm true blue, through and through. I'd love to see the U lose 5 times in a row on the basketball court (or 9 times in a row, if you count the women). Every BYU game should be on tv.

I have a lot of hope that the cougars will become #1 this year and will play well. I'd like to see them beat the u of u again.

Guess what? BYU has a higher percentage of people who make the pros than ute guys. Plus you could probably think of more successful athletic people that played for BYU. Like Danny Ainge(basketball), Steve Young (football) Chad Lewis (football) Jimmer Fredette (basketball) Gifford Nielson (football), Luke Staley (football), Matt Payne (football) and others. P.S. Why would utah bolt the MWC when they can't beat BYU? In fact, they are the #3 best football program in the MWC and the #4 or #5 best basketball program in the MWC. utah will just be a doormat in the Pac-10 for years to come. It doesn't matter what conference BYU is in, BYU just wins.

Think would you want to go a BCS bowl or the National Championship. Most people would say N.C. You have to realize that there was no BCS stuff back before the 1984 when BYU won the championship. You can say that a bowl like the Cotton Bowl back then was equalivent to a BCS bowl. Therefore a BCS bowl is not greater than a national championship. Therefore utah's BCS bowl in 2008 is so not greater than BYU's National Championship bowl in 1984. P.S. BEAT UTAH! BEAT UTAH! BEAT UTAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Cougars defeated PAC-10 runner-up (Oregon State) in the Vegas Bowl, Florida (SEC) in March Madness, Big-12 Champion Texas in the NCAA softball tourney, UCLA in the men's volleyball tourney, Pepperdine and Arizona State in the women's NIT, and there is still more to come. No other team in the MWC had that kind of postseason success during the past year.
