Deseret First - BYU vs Utah

The utes can't compete in the PAC-10. They will end up with Washington State at the bottom of the barrel. We can't hope that Sunday play will get us in the PAC-10 because our attendance and tv ratings don't measure up. Our tv market is already small and byu fans predominate so they always get more viewers. What do we have to offer the PAC-10? We can't field teams in more than half of their sports and we're pretty bad in most of the others.

To ‘classless BCS smack’- for your NIT argument, cougarinboston and myself already covered that. To correct you, the second NIT tourney win was in ’66 at which time the NIT was not the more prestigious tourney (I will use the movie Glory Road as my reference). To your Pac 10 argument, it is very presumptuous of me to say Utah will be in the Pac 10, but all signs point to expansion and Utah is one of the most obvious choices. People are always down on BYU? Give me a break. BYU would fit in ATHLETICALLY, and if it were based solely on athletics, BYU would get in but you and I both know BYU doesn’t fit in other ways- Sunday B Ball contract, non-research university, and let’s be honest- the Pac 10 is very liberal. To NW Coug, thank you for the compliment, and I think we can both say there are those fans on both sides (see We suck comment). To the fan question, honestly I think it is marketing-DFCU does more marketing with BYU (for obvious reasons), so more BYU fans know of this site and DFCU. Utah has the UofU CU that is ON CAMPUS and outside of Duel events, DFCU isn’t as visible to U fans. Cougarinboston- thank you for pointing out I omitted M T&F from my list. Mosesbyu, I have gone over the BYU NC before, the NC vote is subjective, BYU did everything that was asked of them and got a NC. Utah did the same- they were the only undefeated team in ’08-’09 and weren’t given that same distinction. That’s why Utah doesn’t have one. #1BYU fan, there is some truth to your statement about the BCS…

FYI The Directors cup is:A program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's. Began in 1993-94 for Division I by NACDA and USA Today, it was expanded in 1995-96 to include Division II, III and the NAIA. 10 sports in both womens and mens in division I.

utes stink, your first statement is accurate, I never disputed that BYU wasn't better than Utah in golf, I was telling you WHY it wasn't part of the Duel. With your NC in all sports- you have 1 golf title, 0 W Vball, 3 M Vball, 0 M XC and 4 W XC. Rugby is not an NCAA sanctioned sport, so you don't get credit for that. Of ALL your sports with NC's you have only 2 that are multiple winners, so, unless you only have 3 sports you participate in "Most of the sports BYU has won a Championship in they won more than once" is EXTREMELY inaccurate. With your WAC/MWC titles, that's great, next time I hear on Sportscenter or any other relevant sports broadcast about comparing how many conference titles each team has, I will think of you. And lastly, if you polled the NATIONAL media (the local would probably be the same result, also) and asked if BYU's NC is more impressive than what Utah did in '08-'09, I GUARANTEE the majority would say Utah's was more impressive- and that's really what you are arguing, right?

Wow! Chicken utes, first-I didn't learn how to spell at the U? What are you talking about? Second, your Cotton Bowl and NC Trophy are NOT every bit impressive. In '84 you beat a 6-4 Michigan team to clinch the title. In '96 you beat a 9-2 KSU team, which is impressive but YOU WEREN'T UNDEFEATED! You can dismiss the Fiesta bowl, that Pitt team was a joke but Utah smashed an Alabama team that was rank #1 or#2 for over the half the season and had just one loss-to the national champions! By the way, Utah went undefeated again. Thirdly, I don't know if you are choosing to be oblivious or you can't help it. Utah doesn't have this end-all-be-all say on what sports would be included in the Duel! "If there were a head-to-head matchup...” THERE'S NOT! It's not even an argument. You can talk what if's and could be's all you want. But golf, track and XC are all set up as multiple team meets, and it’s not Utah’s fault. To Mr. wrong conclusion, BYU is not nearly as affected by title IX as Utah. Utah can’t “field more teams if they wanted”, they have a fixed budget set in place by the state and Title IX makes it extremely difficult to expand men’s sports. Now, if it were ONLY a budget issue, your argument would be accurate and Utah is cheap, but Title IX affects scholarships. For example, most D1 football teams have 85 scholarships-that is 85 scholarships that have to be matched in women’s athletes. So, when you are losing money from non-revenue sports (women’s) you have to cut costs and possibly athletic programs, which are always the men’s programs (that generate revenue, maybe) because of Title IX. Utah cannot add men’s track or XC without adding another women’s sport, which is just throwing money away.

Mr. chicken utes, thank you for giving a visual to my point. If the Duel included golf, should BYU get Duel points for finishing 4th when Utah finished 8th? That makes no sense! To the track guy, sorry, I thought you were talking about women's like someone else was earlier. The reason why Utah doesn't field those teams is stupid Title IX and funding. UofU is state owned, which means there is a limit on funds/budgets. BYU is private, and I am not saying funds are unlimited but there is ALOT more money coming into the church and school that can be allocated to athletics. BYU can field more teams and have a team for both sexes in each sport because of their funding.

To this "utes stink" character, where did I get all cocky? Where was I running my mouth? I was stating facts. BYU choked against FSU, FSU wasn’t the better team, and it was in Provo- I classify that as a choke. And congratulations, you are winning the duel this year. Are you going to hang your hat on that two years from now when the Duel doesn’t exist because Utah is in the PAC-10 while you are stuck in the MWC? If you go back through all my posts, I have argued points and statements, each fan base will argue their teams are better, I don’t get into that. This year, you guys are better; next year could be a different story. So I don’t waste my time. To the other guy, GOLF IS NOT A DIRECT HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPETITION! That is why golf is not part of the duel. Utah participates in those other sports aside from M-Vball; they are just not included for reasons stated here before.
